VELLORE: The health department in combined Vellore district has constituted 119 medical teams to carry out a comprehensive awareness programme on the coronavirus infection even as officials continue to monitor 12 people who have returned from China. “We have formed special medical teams, one each for the 119 primary health centres (PHCs) in combined Vellore district. These teams will carry out coronavirus awareness activities,” KST Suresh, deputy director (DD) of Health, told Express on Monday. Each team of five members will have a medical officer, health inspector, village health nurse, hospital staffer and nurse. They will visit educational institutions including schools and colleges, public places and bus termini to demonstrate techniques and explain precautionary measures to be adopted to keep the virus away. A workshop on Food Safety—our responsibility to learn and share was organised at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore-Bagayam campus on Saturday. Food Safety Officer, Ranipet, K.S. Devaraj who inaugurated the workshop for Post Graduate and final year students of Department of Dietetics, CMC, Vellore, gave a detailed account of identification of food samples and asked the participants to be cautious on food adulteration. Food safety lectures by experts were part of the programme, where the eminent speakers shared their knowledge at the discussions held later in the day and panellists discussed issues regarding food safety in current scenario at hospitals as well as at home. The objective of the workshop was to create awareness and disseminate food safety measures to be followed in a hospital dietary kitchen to deliver safe nutritious food for patients, said B. Dheveesha was born and brought up at the institution by her father, Vigneswara Rao, who has been in the field for the last 12 years. The girl has entered the India Book of Records as the youngest to perform Silambam. She demonstrated her skills before a select audience and the performance showcased the flexibility of her body and the skills she had developed in just one-and-a-half years. Dheveesha has been a keen observer of the martial art, practised by the trainees right in front of her.

27% of 3rd Standard students in Vellore district cannot read an alphabet

Around 26.6% of Class III students in Vellore district cannot read an alphabet, pointing to major learning issues in classrooms in government and private schools, Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2019 survey on early years of education has found. At the national level, 14.7% of Class III students couldn’t read an alphabet. The survey was conducted in 26 districts across 24 states, covering 1,514 villages and 36,930 children in the 4-8 age group. In Tamil Nadu, 1,550 children in 60 villages of Vellore district were surveyed. The enrollment in Vellore district was more than 99% against the national average of 90%. “Among Class I students, 75.4% couldn’t read an alphabet. In Class II, it was 40.4% and 26.6% in Class III. Only 10.9% of Class I students could read an alphabet and 10% a word, while 3.7% could read Class I text. Among Class II students, 14.5% could read an alphabet, 33.2% a word and 11.9% Class I text. Similar weather conditions expected to prevail on Wednesday(Today) Dense fog disrupted normal life in several places in Vellore and Tirupattur on Tuesday morning even as the minimum temperature climbed up to 28 degrees Celsius in the evening. The foggy condition was also prevalent on Chennai-Bengaluru Highway, Ranipet-Chittoor Road, Vellore-Alangayam Road and some places of Vaniyambadi, Jolarpet and Tirupattur. The visibility dropped to 20 metres on Katpadi-Tiruvalam Road, which led a lorry driver to ram his vehicle on a road divider. Two persons were injured. Six shops — three in Sathuvachari commercial complex and three in Nethaji Market — were sealed by the Vellore Corporation for non-payment of rent for a couple of years on Wednesday. According to a a Corporation official, ₹1.95 lakh was due from the three traders in Sathuvachari. The official said that several reminders seeking payment of rent were issued as per the existing rules, but were not complied with. The team then proceeded to Nethaji Market to seal three more shops, which owed ₹1.35 lakh. The team led by N. Madhivanan, Assistant Commissioner for Zone 2, Vellore Corporation, directed officials to take action against the defaulters and ordered for shops to be sealed. “This is not an isolated case of a defaulter’s shop being sealed. On earlier occasions, many traders have come forward to remit rental dues after their shops were sealed,” said an official. Former Lok Sabha member from Vellore, R.P. Ulaganambi, died in the early hours of Tuesday due to age-related illness, family sources said here. He was 82. He was elected from Vellore for the DMK and served as an MP in the 5th Lok Sabha during 1971-76. Hailing from Ranipet, he studied at Presidency College, Pachaiyappa’s College in Chennai and Madras Law College. A staunch follower of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Thanthai Periyar E.V. Ramaswamy, he was closely associated with agitations organised by the DMK early in his career. After a disagreement with the party high command, he switched his loyalties to Indian National Congress. He started Siddhartha Senior Secondary School, a CBSE school in Sathuvachary, Vellore. He is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. His body will be cremated on Wednesday, said his son, Siddharth Nambi.

Vellore District Collector A. Shanmuga Sundaram cautioned against encouraging sale of junk food inside school premises and asked school authorities to ensure sale didn’t take place within 200 metres. He said there were reports of private schools encouraging such consumption. They must ensure healthy eating habits among children, he said. A canteen committee, which includes experts in nutrition, health and fitness, should be formed to monitor the quality of items supplied to school canteens. The committee should be responsible for checking the quality of food products procured by school canteens, he said. In a recent directive, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India had directed the State food authorities and departments of school education to frame healthy-diet rules for students in accordance with the Food Safety and Standards (Safe Food and Healthy Diets for School Children) Regulations, 2019

Tirupati: Eight school students sustained injuries after the bus in which they were travelling was hit by a tanker on National Highway (NH)-69 near Appinagadipalli village in Ganagavaram mandal of Chittoor district on Sunday. The students, who are from Vikas Model School in Anantapur, had visited Kodaikanal and were returning home when the accident took place. When the bus neared Appinagadipalli, a tanker rammed into the bus while trying to overtake it. Eight students sustained injuries of which three were severely injured. The injured students were taken to the Palamaner area hospital. The three students who sustained severe injuries were subsequently shifted to Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore.

Reverse vending machines, which can handle plastic bottles and beverage cans, were launched in Vellore on Thursday. Launching the smart dustbins, District Collector A. Shanmuga Sundaram said the Vellore City Municipal Corporation has taken a number of steps to eradicate single-use plastics. Two reverse vending machines, one at Block B of the Vellore Collectorate and another at the Corporation office, were installed as part of the efforts. People can dispose of beverage cans and plastic bottles in the machines to prevent clogging of stormwater drains, he said. The smart dustbins were donated by MRF Limited, Arakkonam, as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility activities. Each machine costs ₹5 lakh. This causes motorists to suffer a lot at night and sometimes have accidents.  Therefore, the National Highways Department has taken steps to rehabilitate the dilapidated roads and widen the road where necessary.
